Content Description

The collection consists of papers belonging to Sanjoy Deb Roy, an IFS(Indian Forest Service) officer. It includes his letters, greetings and postcards, and family records. It also contains reports, minutes or agendas of meetings, and photos. Additionally, it has documents of the Project Tiger, Corbett National Park and WII materials.

The collection has been arranged into 4 series.

Series 1 titled Conservation in India contains adminsitrative documents, correspondence, project reports, proposals and papers related to specific projects, committees and roles that Deb Roy was part of. Each sub-series is titled after an organisation, theme or project that Deb Roy had worked with as a consultant, lead or as a member.

Series 2 is titled Administration. It contains documents related to Deb Roy's service in the IFS as well as documents related to his association with the Corbett Foundation.

Series 3 titled Biodata, Ephemera and Personal includes Deb Roy's writings, personal correspondence as well as awards and tributes related to him.

Series 4 is titled Photographs. It contains photos taken during events and documents Deb Roy's time in IFS, especially events related to Project Tiger in India.

Biographical / Historical

Sanjoy Deb Roy was a wildlife protector who worked as an admistrator in the Forest Services in India. He was the head of the Assam Forest Department as well as the Director of the Kaziranga National Park for three years. He was promoted as Chief Wildlife Warden, and was deputed to the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests as the Inspector General of Forests (Wildlife). He retired in 1992. After that, he worked as a consultant and served on several committees in India. He was on four International Union of Conservation and Nature’s (IUCN) Species Specialist Groups (SSGs). Deb Roy served as an advisor to the Environmental Investigation Agency’s (EIA’s) Tigers in Crisis campaign.
